Building our Digital Future – A Message from the Director
Over the last few decades, digital technologies have transformed how we live and work, creating a host of emergent opportunities and challenges. Most of our activities take place in environments with interconnected natural, engineered, informational, and human networks, and they leave massive streams of data. These data represent a rich set of observations with detailed spatial and temporal markers, and they will be analyzed for better or for worse. Our security, well-being and prosperity depend on scientifically rigorous approaches to converting these data to knowledge and solutions.
ICS is at the forefront of critical advances in multi-scale modeling and simulation, statistical inference, and numerical optimization, just to name a few. These and other topics cut across multiple disciplines, providing opportunities for academic excellence through the cross-pollination of foundational elements, models, and tools.
ICS has increased access to massive amounts of data, both from observations and simulations that can be leveraged to enhance the predictability of interactions across a host of disciplinary areas ranging from astronomy to the social sciences. These transformative advances can enable innovation for economic development, inform policies for ensuring environmental quality and safety, and create next-generation systems that enable us to become active participants in our own health, well-being, and security.
