  • Bruce Desmarais, Associate Professor of Political Science

    Network analysis is the primary methodological approach in his research. Areas of application include international conflict and cooperation among countries, campaign finance and  co-sponsorship networks in the US Congress, digital communication networks in local government, diffusion of public policies across the US states, and the interconnectedness of scientific research and US regulatory policymaking.  His current research agenda is generously supported by three grants from the US National Science foundation and one from the Russell Sage Foundation.

  • Michael Hallquist, Assistant Professor of Psychology

    My research characterizes the developmental psychopathology of personality dysfunction in adolescence and young adulthood. I am interested in how personality traits, interpersonal relationships, and disrupted maturation of neurobehavioral systems are associated with the emergence of personality dysfunction, especially borderline personality disorder (BPD). Work in our laboratory spans clinical, behavioral, and neuroimaging assessments of personality and psychopathology. As a developmental psychopathologist, my research also focuses on the normative maturation of brain systems implicated in self-control, reward processing, and emotion regulation, which informs a better understanding of abnormal trajectories in BPD.

  • Xiao Liu, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering

    My group focuses on combining multi-modal neuroimaging techniques, e.g., fMRI, electrophysiology, and simultaneous fMRI-EEG, and computational approach to understand functional connectivity and temporal dynamics of the brain, particularly at different consciousness states such as sleep and anaesthesia.

    Environmental hydraulics, sediment transport, multiphase flow, CFD, water quality modeling.

    The major thrust in our research is to develop and utilize novel computational models for problems in environmental hydraulics and water resource engineering in general. Complementary to computational modeling, we also do some lab experiments and analytical work.

    Robosome-associated protein folding, macromolecular self-assembly and chaperone interactions in living cells.

    Studying these systems from simulations at the molecular level up to the systems level in terms of proteome-wide behavior.


  • Zita Oravecz, Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies

    My primary research interest lies in studying individual differences from a process modeling perspective. The general goal is to develop and apply state-of-the-art statistical approaches to particular areas of substantive research (in my case emotion and cognition) that would be difficult or impossible to study without novel methods of analysis.

    One model of particular interest is the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process model that describes temporal changes in terms of psychologically meaningful parameters. I am currently developing a multivariate version of the model to capture changes and synchronicity in different aspects of well-being over time.

    My research bridges the areas of big data analytics, data mining, machine learning, database and biomedical informatics. I am particularly interested in developing algorithms for analyzing massive data sets generated in social, biological and medical domains.

  • Minghui Zhu, Dorothy Quiggle Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering

    His research interests lie in the design, analysis and control of multi-agent networks with applications in multi-vehicle networks, security and the smart grid. He is the co-author of the book “Distributed optimization-based control of multi-agent networks in complex environments” (Springer, 2015). He was the recipient of the Powell fellowship and the Back fellowship at the University of California, San Diego in 2007. For his Ph.D. research, he received the award of Outstanding Graduate Student of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, San Diego in 2011. He is an associate editor of the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society. He was selected as an outstanding reviewer of Automatica in 2013 and 2014.
