Graduate Research Assistant – HPC Software Specialist

Graduate Assistantship

The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) seeks talented graduate students, seeking advanced degrees in multiple scientific areas to serve as HPC Software Specialists. This is a Spring ’18 graduate assistantship position with an opportunity to continue through the Academic Year. You must be available to work 20 hours/week at University Park for this graduate assistantship. As a HPC Software Specialist you will work in our ICS i-ASK Center where you will work with ICS staff and faculty and researcher groups to resolve technical issues that aid in their use of ICS-ACI, such as: Account and access-related issues; Implementation of scientific applications and utilization of the ICS-ACI systems; Installing, testing, and administering applications on ICS-ACI systems; Generating system usage and utilization data.

Requirements: The successful candidate will be a master’s or doctoral student in good standing in a related discipline, preferably in engineering, statistics, applied mathematics, computer science; understanding of basic coding principles, domain specific knowledge in related research areas is a plus; knowledge and use of Linux/UNIX based systems, preferably in a high-performance computing environment; excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.

Preferred Skills: Experience with using queuing systems and schedulers; experience in providing customer service; preferably in a technical support/help desk environment; the ability to pick up and learn general concepts and technologies quickly and independently.
