Graduate Student and Internship Opportunities

We are looking for talented, goal-oriented graduate and undergraduate students with interests in high-performance computing (HPC) and scientific software applications to intern with ICS. Our interns work on projects that matter to Penn State researchers, from astronomers to geneticists to zoologists. You’ll get a chance to show off your technical skills and gain golden experience providing real solutions to real problems. If you want to work in a environment where you will be constantly challenged and helped to grow, check out an internship with ICS.

Undergraduate Internships

We are looking for upper-division undergraduates in good standing with the following qualifications:

  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, including speaking technical concepts to nontechnical audiences;
  • Ability and desire to learn general concepts and technologies quickly and independently.
  • Preferred experience working in customer service—ideally a tech support, help desk environment;
  • Understanding of high-performance computing systems, preferably Unix/Linux-based systems;
  • Experience in running and/or providing support for scientific applications on large-scale computers.

Undergraduate Interns will work in the Institute for CyberScience i-ASK Center. The job typically entails working with faculty and researchers to resolve technical issues that aid in their use of our cyberinfrastructure, such as: Account and access-related issues; Implementation of scientific applications and utilization of the ICS-ACI systems; Installing, testing, and administering applications on ICS-ACI systems; Generating system usage and utilization data.

Graduate Internships:

We are looking for master’s or doctoral students in good standing in statistics, applied mathematics, or computer science. We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Understanding of high-performance computing and experience in R;
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, including speaking technical concepts to nontechnical audiences;
  • Some familiarity with the statistics involved in R code including but not limited to probability theory, statistical inference, regression, design of experiments, data mining, machine learning, visualization, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.

Graduate interns work with faculty and researchers to assist them in advancing their research. They will assist in resolving technical issues, install and test software, and aid faculty and researchers in their use of the ICS-ACI system.
