Using social media to solve social problems- study funded by ICS seed grant

Posted on August 20, 2018

Guangqing Chi, an ICS associate and associate professor of rural sociology and demography and public health sciences in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education, used his ICS seed grant to help fund his National Science Foundation-funded study on social media and social problems. Chi used geotagged tweets from 2014 to 2017 to compare data to county census data in the United States. The team will better their existing methods to determine demographics such as age, sex and race/ethnicity. They will use these values to predict county-wide characteristics and migration patterns. Learn more about their study and it’s implications on Penn State News.
