ICS offers graduate student travel awards

The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) is accepting applications for the SuperComputing ’17 Student Travel Awards. Through this new program, graduate students can receive funding to attend the SuperComputing 2017 (SC17) conference in Denver, Colorado, this November. Applications are due Aug. 15.

Up to three awards of $1,000 will be made to cover student travel costs and conference registration. Students presenting at the conference will receive preference.

SC17 is an international conference for high-performance computing (HPC) industry professionals and researchers who rely on HPC for their work. Several conference strands are oriented to students, including a job fair, a poster competition, a showcase of doctoral dissertation research, and a mentor-protégé program that will pair newcomers with veteran conference participants.

“SC17 is a great opportunity for graduate students to develop professionally, network with potential employers, present their research, and stay current with the latest HPC techniques,” said ICS Director Jenni Evans. “I’m excited to help students attend through this award program.”

As one of the five interdisciplinary research institutes under the Office of the Vice President for Research, ICS is dedicated to supporting cyber-enabled research across the disciplines. ICS builds an active community of researchers using computational methods in a wide range of fields through co-hiring of tenure-track faculty, providing seed funding for ambitious computational research projects, and offering access to high-performance computing resources through its Advanced CyberInfrastructure. With the support of ICS, Penn State researchers harness the power of big data, big simulation, and big computing to solve the world’s problems.
