 Research Interests of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research solicits basic research proposals on a wide range of scientific themes of interest to the US Air Force. Areas of interest include Computational Cognition and Machine Intelligence, Computational Mathematics, Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems, Information Assurance and Cybersecurity, Remote Sensing, and many more. Proposals for $200K – $400K per year encouraged. Most awards are 3 years in duration. Proposals are evaluated as they are received and may be submitted at any time.

NASA Lunar Data Analysis

NASA seeks proposals that enhance the scientific return of lunar missions through the use of mission data. Tasks responsive to this call include data analysis tasks; non data-analysis tasks that require the use of lunar mission data; and non data-analysis tasks that significantly enhance the use or facilitate the interpretation of lunar mission data These tasks may incorporate theory, modeling, laboratory studies, correlative analyses, and/or other research. The Whitehall Foundation: Bioscience Research Projects 

The Whitehall Foundation supports scholarly research in the life sciences through its research grants and grants-in-aid programs, particularly in dynamic areas of basic biological research that are not heavily supported by federal agencies or other foundations with a specialized mission. The foundation emphasizes the support of young scientists at the beginning of their careers and productive senior scientists who wish to move into new fields of interest. NCI Research Specialist (Core-based Scientist) Award

The Research Specialist Award (Core-based Scientist) is intended to provide salary support to encourage the development of a career for exceptional researchers who want to continue to support cancer research. The award is intended for research-oriented investigators with significant, relevant experience, who have shown clear evidence of productivity and research excellence in the field of their training, and who would like to support a particular research activity (e.g., core/shared resource/central scientific support), with the goal of making significant contributions to behavioral, biomedical (basic or clinical), computational, bioimaging or bioengineering research that is relevant to the NCI mission. NSF Campus Cyberinfrastructure

The Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CC*) program invests in innovative, coordinated, and secure campus, multi-campus and multiinstitution cyberinfrastructure (CI) components. The 2017 CC* solicitation refocuses on networking capacity, capability and innovation, while continuing to address the challenges of applying CI expertise to enabling science. These investments are intended to exhibit demonstrable higher levels of performance, reliability and predictability for science applications and distributed research projects. Learning and workforce development (LWD) in CI is explicitly addressed in the program. Science-driven requirements are the primary motivation for any proposed activity. CC* awards will be supported in four areas: Data Driven Networking Infrastructure for the Campus and Researcher awards will be supported at up to $500,000 total for up to 2 years; Network Design and Implementation for Small Institutions awards will be supported at up to $750,000 total for up to 2 years; Network Integration and Applied Innovation awards will be supported at up to $1,000,000 total for up to 2 years; and Network Performance Engineering and Outreach awards will be supported at up to $3,500,000 total for up to 4 years. NIH The Application of Big Data Analytics to Drug Abuse Research

This NSF is seeking proposals that address the multitude of challenges in analyzing and integrating the diverse data types acquired from drug addiction research. In particular, NIDA and NSF is interested in harnessing Big Data analytics to gain new knowledge related to the neurobiological and behavioral changes occurring due to drug use and addiction. Types of research and experimental approaches that are being sought to achieve the objectives and analyses may involve one or more data sets or knowledge sources, but should address fundamental research questions associated with substance abuse research and also develop computation tools (e.g. aggregated datasets, standards, analytic software) facilitating future analyses of substance abuse research data. NIH BRAIN Initiative: Theories, Models and Methods for Analysis of Complex Data from the Brain

The broad goal of The BRAIN Initiative is to understand the circuits and patterns of neural activity that give rise to mental experience and behavior. The basis of proposals should be rooted soliciting new theories, ideas, and conceptual frameworks; computational models; and mathematical and statistical methods for driving experimental data collection and analyzing complex data from the nervous system. Applications must focus on tool building and dissemination in the domain of theories about neural circuit mechanisms, models of circuit structure and function, and/or computational methods of analysis spanning the scale of neurons and firing rates.  NIH Accelerating the Pace of Drug Abuse Research Using Existing Data

The NIH is seeking applications proposing the innovative analysis of social science, behavioral, administrative, and neuroimaging data to study the etiology and epidemiology of drug using behaviors , prevention of drug use and HIV, and health service utilization. This announcement encourages the analyses of public use and other extant community-based or clinical datasets to their full potential in order to increase our knowledge of etiology, trajectories of drug using behaviors and their consequences, strategies to guide the development, testing, implementation, and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient services for the prevention and treatment of drug abuse and HIV. Awards are limited to under $500,000 direct costs per year and must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. Due February 5, 2018. NIH Neuroscience Research on Drug Abuse

The NIH seeks proposals with basic neurobiological studies that use in vivo and in vitro model systems as well as studies in humans. Applicants are especially encouraged to include appropriate behavioral models and paradigms of behavioral components or stages of addiction in their research proposals, especially in response to chronic exposure to drugs, different drug administration regimens, withdrawal, or recovery. The subject of study can be at the level of a single protein or gene, neurobiological system, or the entire organism. Proposals may include developmental approaches; genetic, molecular and cellular approaches; neural circuit and systems neuroscience approaches; behavioral approaches; development of tools and reagents for the study of substance use;computational modeling and secondary data analysis; and more. NSF Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience

Through the CRCNS program, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the French National Research Agency (ANR), the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF), and Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) support collaborative activities that will advance the understanding of nervous system structure and function, mechanisms underlying nervous system disorders, and computational strategies used by the nervous system. Two classes of proposals will be considered: Research Proposals describing collaborative research projects, and Data Sharing Proposals to enable sharing of data and other resources.  ARL Basic and Applied Scientific Research Proposal

The Army Research Lab is seeking proposals for research based on the following S&T (Science and Technology) campaigns: Computational Sciences, Materials Research, Sciences for Maneuver, Information Sciences, Sciences for Lethality and Protection, Human Sciences, and Assessment and Analysis. It is structured around Key Campaign Initiatives (KCIs), and Core Campaign Enablers (CCEs) for this proposal include: in-house technical programs focused on pursuing scientific discoveries, innovations, and knowledge product transitions that are expected to lead to greatly enhanced capabilities for the operational Army of 2030 and beyond.  NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity

The Dimensions of Biodiversity campaign takes a broad view of biodiversity that ranges from genes through species to ecosystems in an effort to integrate both descriptive and functional aspects of biodiversity on Earth. The long-term goal of the campaign is to develop an integrated understanding of the key dimensions of biodiversity in an ever-changing world. The Dimensions of Biodiversity program currently targets three fundamental dimensions of biodiversity – genetic diversity, phylogenetic
diversity, and functional diversity. Integration across these three dimensions is an essential aspect of all proposals. Research awards will be up to five years duration and up to a total of $2,000,000 for both individual and collaborative projects.Due Febrary 28, 2018. NSF Dear Colleague Letter: Joint NSF/ENG and AFOSR Funding Opportunity: Supporting Fundamental Research in the Quantitative Representation of Microstructures (QRM)

The NSF in collaboration with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), seeks Dear Colleague Letters for multidisciplinary teams with the potential to transform fundamental understanding of structural Materials through the Quantitative Representation of Microstructures. NSF’s and AFOSR’s interest lies in innovative research projects which bring together members of the Materials Science and Engineering community with experts in computation and visualization, to address the challenges associated with accurate quantification and representation of the microstructures of Engineering Materials. awards will range from $300,000 to $450,000 for a 36- to 48-month period. NSF Cyberlearning for Work at the Human-Technology Frontier

The purpose of the Cyberlearning for Work at the Human-Technology Frontier program is to fund exploratory and synergistic research in learning technologies to prepare learners to excel in work at the human-technology frontier.This program responds to the pressing societal need to educate and re-educate learners of all ages (students,teachers and workers) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content areas to ultimately function in highly technological environments, including in collaboration with intelligent systems. Learning technology research in this program should be informed by the convergence of multiple disciplines: education and learning sciences, computer and information science and engineering, and cognitive, behavioral and social sciences. NSF Scalable Parallelism in the Extreme (SPX)

NSF seeking proposals that aim to support transformative projects that re-evaluate the traditional computer hardware and software stack. Thus, SPX seeks proposals combining a deep understanding in parallel programming with expertise in software tools; experience in heterogeneous parallel architectures with algorithm design expertise; experience in emerging substrate technologies with architecture and systems design; knowledge in an application domain with expertise in energy-efficient memory hierarchies; hardware design know-how 4 with human factors expertise; experience in runtime platforms and virtualization tools with knowledge in reliable and distributed computing; and knowledge of parallel linear algebra or statistical algorithms. Simons Foundation: Collaboration Grants for Mathematicians competition

The Simons Foundation is inviting applications for 2018 Collaboration Grants for Mathematicians to stimulate collaboration in the field primarily through the funding of travel and related expenditures.The goal of the program, which is an initiative of the foundation’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences division, is to support the “mathematical marketplace” by substantially increasing collaborative contacts between mathematicians.  HHS Short-term Mentored Career Enhancement Awards for Mid-Career Investigators to Integrate Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences

The objective of the Career Enhancement Award for Experienced Investigators (K18) is to provide investigators with support for an intensive period of mentored research experience to acquire new research capabilities in research areas supported by the sponsoring NIH Institute(s)/Center(s). Such experiences will afford candidate investigators protected time to: 1) enrich and expand their expertise and research programs through retooling in new techniques, emerging technologies, and/or scientific areas; and/or 2) redirect their research programs in new trajectories; and/or 3) catalyze research collaborations in new research directions. NIH NHGRI Genomic Data Science Analysis, Visualization, and Informatics Lab-space

The National Human Genome Research Institute seeks proposals to establish a Genomic Data Science Analysis, Visualization, Informatics Lab-space (“AnVIL”) in support of genomic research. The AnVIL will use a cloud-based data storage and compute environment to address challenges in storing, transfering and working with genomic sequence data. Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS): Core Programs 

The Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) studies the roles of people, computers, and information. IIS supports activities that develop knowledge about the use of information technology, increase our capability to create, manage, and understand data and information in circumstances ranging from personal remote devices to globally-distributed systems, and advance our understanding of how computational systems can exhibit of intelligence. Proposals could fall under one of three programs: Cyber-Human Systems, Information Integration and Informatics, and Robust Intelligence. NSF Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC)

NSF is looking for proposals that address cybersecurity and privacy, drawing on expertise in computing, communication and information sciences, engineering, economics, education, mathematics, statistics, and social behavioral sciences. The program aims to protect and preserve growing social and economic benefits of cyber systems while ensuring security and privacy. Small projects may be granted up $500,000 for up to three years. Medium projects may be granted $500,001 to $1,200,000 for up to four years. NSF seeks joint Japan-US trustworthy networking projects that investigate novel protocols and architectures to realize a future resilient edge cloud/network system for the Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems (CPS).
