Choosing the best supercomputer for your research

Dr. Chuck Pavloski, R&D engineer for earth sciences at the Institute for CyberScience (ICS), will offer a seminar entitled “Big Decision: Choosing Your HPC Resources Wisely” to the Penn State research community. The free seminar will be held August 10 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in W203 Millennium Science Complex.

The seminar will help researchers who need to use high-performance computing (HPC) choose the best HPC resources to fit their needs. Choosing the right system for any given research project can be challenging, since researchers face a wide array of options, including Penn State’s Advanced CyberInfrastructure (ICS-ACI) and external supercomputing systems such as the Texas Advanced Computing Center’s Stampede and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center’s Bridges. Many external HPC systems are part of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), a partnership of supercomputing resources across the US.

Pavloski will discuss the features of these HPC resources and more. He’ll also clarify which resources are typically optimal for various kinds of research projects, such as machine learning, data visualization, traditional modeling and large dataset analysis. He will also explain how to access these computing systems.

Pavloski received his Ph.D. in meteorology from Penn State. Prior to joining ICS as the institute’s domain expert in earth sciences, he served as a senior research associate in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, focusing on applying HPC to atmospheric reDr.mote sensing, weather analysis, and prediction. As Penn State’s XSEDE Campus Champion, he helps Penn State researchers gain access to XSEDE resources and assists them with choosing the best resource to meet their needs.
