RCC Moves to ICS

Update on major changes in research computing at Penn State.

Since February 2014, the ICS has operated the Lion-X clusters, and we are delighted to report that as of July 1st, the staff of the former RCC has been resituated as part of a growing and improving ICS. These changes are part of a series of steps initiated by Executive Vice President and Provost Nick Jones and Interim Vice President for Research Neil Sharkey designed to help Penn State deliver the broad spectrum of computing and data services that are required to advance research at Penn State, as defined in a series of recent reports (listed below). Our new website contains more information on the background, future plans, the growing ICS Staff, and the “coordinating committee” that is advising on a major transition.

The ICS seeks to engineer and deliver research cyberinfrastructure (CI) systems and services that enhance researcher productivity. These will be developed on shared high performance clusters with customization through software to support both traditional high performance computing and virtualized environments that can allow interoperability of a wider range of tools tailored to serve a variety of individuals and communities of Penn State researchers.

If You Need Assistance or Advice

For assistance in developing research CI elements of proposals to external agencies, or if you would like to know more about how to acquire some nodes in a shared cluster, or want information about the new services that are under development, please contact aci-info@ics.psu.edu.

The ICS staff are excited about this opportunity to better serve your research needs. We hope to significantly improve our advanced CI services within the next two to three months. We have also launched our much-improved website that should help you understand changes, improvements, and future planes.

On behalf of the ICS staff, I seek your engagement and input as we proceed with next steps.
