ICS affiliate uses 3D electron microscopy to study wastewater recycling

Posted on September 19, 2018

Enrique Gomez, professor of chemical engineering and ICS affiliate, used electron tomography and quantitative analysis of 3D models to study the structure of reverse osmosis membranes widely used for salt water desalination wastewater recycling. Gomez stated that these reverse osmosis membranes are layers of material that screen out 99 to 99.9 percent of salt while allowing water to pass through. His team studied the materials of the membrane to have a better understanding of the material and it’s implications. Learn more about this story on Penn State News.
