HPC Opportunities for Penn State Students

Are you a talented, goal-oriented graduate or undergraduate student with interests in high-performance computing (HPC) and scientific software applications? What kinds of internships does ICS offer?

We often seek graduate assistants and interns to assist our Operations team in running our i-ASK Center help desk. These interns answer questions that Penn State researchers may have while using ICS-ACI, our high-performance computing system, and may also produce documentation about the system. We also incorporate interns into our communications team to assist with web content generation, marketing, graphic design, and social media. The types of internships ICS has open vary from semester to semester.

The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) seeks a Client Engagement Graduate Assistant to join our engagement team. You will be an integral contributor to a dynamic and growing team of specialists supported by an exciting $60 million Penn State investment in advanced research cyberinfrastructure (ICS-ACI). Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance research cloud to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining, and other high-performance computing operations. You will participate as an important member of our community of specialists to support this ground-breaking work. As our Client Engagement liaison, you will work as part of a team to provide proactive client support such as assisting clients to maximize their ICS-ACI investment through proactive outreach. This includes assisting researchers in troubleshooting or optimizing their code, developing code testing methods, assisting researchers in streamlining their workflows, building software packages to support researchers and working with researchers and research teams to help them better utilize the ICS-ACI system to support their research. This position requires a graduate student in good standing; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level Wage. Desired skills include: experience in a scientific field (engineering, science, math, etc.) and experience performing computational analysis in a high-performance computing environment. Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills are greatly desired. Additional preferred education, experience or certifications The ability to pick up and learn information technology concepts and infrastructure quickly and independently. Undergraduate Computation Research Assistant Intern

The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) seeks talented, goal-oriented students with interests in high-performance computing (HPC) and scientific software applications. ICS provides a cyberinfrastructure (hardware, software, communications, and networking), expertise, and advanced research computing capabilities to foster innovation, collaboration, and increase scholarly productivity across all areas of research university-wide. Our computation research assistant interns have ongoing opportunities to work with leading-edge technologies and to expand their technical expertise, while working within the stimulating intellectual environment of supporting the diverse academic and research pursuits. This is a paid internship for Fall 2018 with the strong possibility of renewal for Spring 2019; the intern must be available to work a minimum of 10 hours/week and must be available for weekend hours. Requirements: Upper-division undergraduate Student in good standing; Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, including speaking technical concepts to nontechnical audiences; Ability and desire to learn general concepts and technologies quickly and independently. Additional experiences that are a plus: Experience working in customer service – ideally a tech support, help desk environment; Experience with Linux-based systems is a plus; Scripting or programming experience on Linux is a plus; Understanding of high-performance computing systems, preferably Unix/Linux-based systems; Experience in running and/or providing support for scientific applications on large-scale computers. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will work as a member of the operations team and in the ICS-ACI i-ASK Center. The intern will work with faculty and researchers to resolve technical issues as well as provide systems administration for our ICS-ACI systems. Duties include: Resolving account and access-related issues; Investigating basic problems and support solutions to scientific application programs and/or hardware; Monitoring ICS-ACI systems by analyzing and troubleshooting system components for optimal performance; Improving ICS-ACI monitoring and troubleshooting tools and processes; Supporting help desk inquiries and issues. The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) seeks a Data Analytics Graduate Assistant (GA) to join our administrative team. This person will be an integral contributor to a fast-paced and growing team of specialists at an institute supporting research cyberinfrastructure. Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance research cloud to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining and other high-performance computing operations. The experience gained by our graduate students is a skillset highly sought after by future employers. This graduate assistantship position is a half-time grade 12 or 14, dependent upon experience, for the 2018 fall semester and comes with tuition and stipend. There is an excellent possibility for 2019 spring renewal, as well as potential for future academic year renewals. As our Data Analytics GA, you will: Transform data into actionable business insights by conducting extensive analyses of ICS’s data sets, including: inventory and clients, work productivity, system metrics and measurements, and various interdependencies; develop a deep understanding of ICS’s business processes as they relate to our entire ICS cyber-ecosystem of infrastructure, staff, clients and services; and design, code and implement business intelligence components such as complex reports, dashboards, data visualizations, infographics and stored procedures. This position requires a graduate student in good standing. Desired skills include: experience in business processes and data analysis; experience with researching topics and developing complex data reports and recommendations; knowledge of statistical packages (R or similar); very good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills; ability to pick up and learn general concepts and technologies quickly; and ability to work independently with minimal guidance.
